After a two-year hiatus from competition, Colbey Northcutt made her long-awaited return to mixed martial arts action in November 2019 – and now, the American flyweight cannot wait for a more productive year.
The 26-year-old, who is the sister of fellow ONE Championship athlete “Super” Sage Northcutt, overwhelmed Putri “Ami” Padmi in all areas of the game to earn the unanimous decision victory at ONE: EDGE OF GREATNESS in Singapore.
“After two and a half years off, I felt fantastic. Obviously, I would’ve loved to have gotten the finish, but that was the first time I had ever gone the full 15 minutes,” she said.
“It could not have gone any better – and I feel great.”
Despite having to settle for a unanimous decision, Northcutt had multiple opportunities to finish her Indonesian rival in the first round.
She delivered a lethal payload of strikes in the opening frame, and she even managed to lock in an armbar and triangle choke. But Padmi hung tough till the end of the round.
“I was hitting her really hard, and she was taking some shots,” the American said.
“She had a lot of heart and did not want to give up. She surprised me with that aspect, but everything else panned out the way I had planned.”
Although she showcased great skill, the 36-time Karate World Champion intends to unveil her full arsenal the next time she competes.
“Everybody got to see my striking, but they also got to see some of my ground game. I got to show my skill set and that I’m well-rounded,” she said.
“I’m happy that I got to do that, but I know that I can do so much more.”
Since her win, Northcutt has been back in training camp and is eager to appear in the Circle more often in 2020.
“I would love to fight at least three times. I want to be active, that’s the goal. That would be ideal for me,” she said.
Northcutt also wants to follow in the footsteps of the Lee siblings and become the latest brother-sister duo to feature on the same event in The Home Of Martial Arts.
“I think to be able to fight alongside Sage would be a dream come true for both of us.”
