ONE Championship will usher in 2020 with a blockbuster card in Bangkok, Thailand.
Many of the athletes on the bill at ONE: A NEW TOMORROW are fearsome grapplers.
Before they enter the Circle on Friday, 10 January, let’s take a look at three of the finest submission victories from the athletes who are scheduled to compete inside the Impact Arena.
Miura’s Trademark Americana
During her ONE debut last February, rising women’s strawweight contender Ayaka Miura made an impact by submitting Laura Balin with a memorable scarf hold Americana in the first round.
Emboldened by her victory, Miura repeated her trademark submission against challenger Samara “Marituba” Santos at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES in August.
Miura kicked things off with a head and arm throw that allowed her to quickly get into the scarf hold position, but unfortunately, she could not get past Santos’ excellent ground defense.
The Tribe Tokyo MMA representative managed to break free from an inverted triangle in the closing seconds of the first round, and she returned in the second frame determined to turn things around.
The judoka scored a swift double-leg takedown and moved into the scarf hold position once again.
This time, she trapped Santos’ left arm with her left thigh before driving her hip forward to crank the arm.
Just 39 seconds into round two, “Marituba” tapped, giving Miura her second-straight Americana submission victory.
Stamp’s Impressive Rear-Naked Choke
Last August at ONE: DREAMS OF GOLD, Stamp Fairtex showcased her evolution as a mixed martial artist.
In her second professional mixed martial arts bout, the ONE Atomweight Kickboxing and Muay Thai World Champion secured a stunning rear-naked choke submission win over India’s Asha “Knockout Queen” Roka.
Both women were happy to open the encounter with a striking exchange. But it would not last long.
When Roka, an Indian national boxing champion, reached in to pull the trigger, Stamp caught on and gave her a hard right before sweeping her to the canvas.
Once on the ground, the Fairtex representative proceeded to deliver heavy ground and pound strikes from the mount. Although Stamp came close to scoring an armbar and guillotine choke, “Knockout Queen” hung tough to make it to the next round.
After an intense striking battle in round two, things shifted back to the canvas in round three. Once again, Stamp brilliantly swept an oncoming Roka to the mat and quickly moved to mount.
As she rained down hard punches, Roka gave up her back. The Thai native quickly locked in a tight rear-naked choke to seal the victory and earn her first submission win.
Ma Jia Wen’s Deep Choke
“Cannon” Ma Jia Wen proved his grappling superiority in his win over Pakistan’s Ahmed “Wolverine” Mujtaba in March 2018.
The Chinese national freestyle wrestling silver medalist submitted Mujtaba with a deep rear-naked choke in the second round to score his third-straight victory.
Ma had to deal with an exuberant showing from his Pakistani rival early in the first round. Every time he was taken down, the Chinese athlete got back to his feet and threatened “Wolverine” with his hands.
“Cannon” came out firing in the second round. After he took Mujtaba to the ground, Ma got to his back and quickly sunk in the rear-naked choke, leaving the Pakistani athlete with no choice but to tap at the 2:38 mark of round two.
