Johnny Nunez never expected fatherhood to change him so drastically, but after the birth of his daughter, the transformations were undeniable.
Nunez migrated from Las Vegas, Nevada to Singapore with ONE Championship Vice President Miesha Tate and their baby daughter, Amaia, in April 2019.
Shortly after the move, he earned a spot on the Evolve Fight Team, and now he cannot wait to represent the martial arts gym on the global stage.
“I’m really excited to bring what I learned over to Evolve in Asia and be a part of building this culture here,” Nunez said.
Although “Johnny Boy” traded in the familiarity of the USA for the unfamiliarity of a foreign land, he feels blessed to have his daughter by his side.
“Training camp here is going great so far, but the best part of my day is just being able to see Amaia after a hard day’s work at Evolve.”
According to Nunez, fatherhood has instilled in him a newfound sense of peace as he begins a new chapter with ONE Championship.
“Ever since Amaia was born, I feel like time has really slowed down and I’m able to see things a lot clearer,” Nunez said.
“I’m calmer and more grown up about a lot of stuff, and being a dad, you really want to enjoy the process – that has helped me in adjusting to things over here relatively quickly.”
Being in Singapore has not only given Nunez clarity and a slower lifestyle, but in many ways, it has given him a new family and a new purpose.
“I’ve been to a couple of ONE’s shows and everyone there’s like a family. We all help each other out – the fighters, the staff, they all come together,” he said.
“I like to help others and be a role model, so it’s great to see how natural that is in ONE Championship.
“Especially now that I’m a dad, it’s even more important that I recognize how important is it to be a good role model.”
