On Sunday, 13 October, the iconic Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo welcomes an ensemble of the greatest warriors for The Home Of Martial Arts’ historic 100th live show, ONE: CENTURY.
Ahead of this momentous occasion, we turn the clock back one year and look at the careers of three superstars set to perform in Japan.
Shinya Aoki Clinches World Title Shot
Japanese submission ace and martial arts legend Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki scored a 57-second win in October 2018.
At ONE: KINGDOM OF HEROES, Aoki squared off against Ev “ET” Ting for a shot at the ONE Lightweight World Title.
“Tobikan Judan” wasted little time and took Ting down within seconds. He locked in a triangle choke and proceeded to render his rival unconscious in the first round.
The Japanese ace also set a ONE record for most submissions by a lightweight, with five.
Aoki claimed the belt this past March thanks to another lightning-quick submission, but he lost it to young phenom Christian “The Warrior” Lee in May 2019. Nevertheless, the Evolve MMA representative is eyeing a comeback.
He will enter his next contest at ONE: CENTURY PART II as the home favorite against Filipino warrior Honorio “The Rock” Banario.
Angela Lee Retains Atomweight Gold Throughout Rocky Run
In a match-up of epic proportions, “Unstoppable” Angela Lee defended her ONE Women’s Atomweight World Title against Japanese challenger Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi at ONE: UNSTOPPABLE DREAMS in May 2018.
With another World Title defense in the books, all signs pointed to a classic showdown with ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan.
Just as “Unstoppable” was about to realize her goal of becoming a two-division ONE Women’s World Champion, a back injury sidelined her.
Although Lee made a full recovery, she fell just short in her attempt to challenge “The Panda” for strawweight gold in March.
The Singaporean faced arguably the toughest stretch of her professional career in July, dropping a close contest to eight-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion Michelle Nicolini.
“Unstoppable” is determined to wipe the slate clean with her fourth World Title defense at atomweight, this time against an old foe in Xiong at ONE: CENTURY PART I.
As the first of two double-header World Championship events, this rematch is sure to bring fireworks.
Giorgio Petrosyan Trailblazes His Way Into The ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship Final
In November 2018, Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan put on a clinic in his second ONE Super Series outing.
Petrosyan defeated Sorgraw Petchyindee Academy at ONE: HEART OF THE LION after three rounds to move to the front of the queue for a ONE Super Series World Title shot.
His dominant performances earned the Milan-based kickboxer the chance to enter the newly announced ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix.
The allure of being crowned greatest kickboxer on the planet is an accolade the Italian legend craves deeply, and the stakes are high with the winner earning a US$1 million grand prize.
Petrosyan faces Frenchman Samy “AK47” Sana in the blockbuster Grand Prix Final at ONE: CENTURY PART II.
