Martin Nguyen - Quest For Power

Australia’s Martin Nguyen had a great showing on his recent fight in Jakarta at ONE Championship “Quest for Power”, making quick work over his opponent Kazunori Yokota with a finish in round one, earning him Fight Of The Night honors with yet another impressive win in the ONE cage. This stretches his win streak to four fights in a row, making a resounding statement for perhaps a title contention and a possible rematch with reigning Featherweight Champion Marat Gafurov; an opportunity Nguyen must certainly have his mind on for a chance to redeem his last bitter lost.

The Aussie’s return to the cage could be summed up as an almost flawless performance the entire fight. He was patient with his strike selections, sticking to his best weapons in the stand up exchanges, and executing to devastating effect whenever his shots land on target. Here is the statistical low-down of his handy work.

Martin Nguyen Stats (ONE 51)

As the saying goes: “know your strengths and use them well…” this could not be truer for “The Situ-Asian” as he masterfully utilized that big right hand of his to the effect of:

  • 67% – Accuracy
  • 75% – Optimal Hit Rate
  • 33% – Critical Hit Rate

What was surprising about this fight was the game plan that was employed by Kazunori Yokota. It is by no means a secret that Nguyen packs a heavy right hand and he always looks to counter with very high efficiency. Yet, the Japanese seemed unprepared for it, making little effort to circle away and mostly leaving his head open or moving straight into Nguyen’s power overhand right. Even after eating a couple of rights clean early in the round, Yokota did not adjust his strategy midway until he got his bell rung…

Nevertheless, it seems like we are witnessing a prime Martin Nguyen making a serious push in his fight career and it is simply amazing to watch. Do you agree that he deserves a title shot next? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
